Local demoncracy conversation series
Council elections are coming up this year! Ahead of the polls opening in October, the Democracy for Dinner group is hosting a series of open discussions about democracy at the local level. These will cover themes like:
What matters to you in your local area?
What kind of representation would you like to see?
What do you see as the role of council (including some clarification about this where helpful!)?
The purpose of these discussions is to boost civic involvement, with a focus on values and principles and NOT on specific contentious issues or partisan politics.
The West End is the first of these sessions and therefore will also serve as a trial for the format. We request that all participants joining us do so in a spirit of openness and respect for each other as we explore these topics together.
To register your attendance at this free event, please go to https://events.humanitix.com/local-democracy-conversation-series-west-end
We hope to see you there!

Flood Recovery and Preparedness Consultation
Dear West-enders,
You are invited to a West End Resilience Discussion on FLOOD RECOVERY AND PREPAREDNESS to be held on Monday 16 October, 7-8.30pm, at the Former Tea Rooms in Castlemaine Botanical Gardens.
It is nearly a year since our neighbourhood was impacted by severe flooding. The newly appointed Council Community Recovery and Resilience Officers, Natalie Pitts and Neale Chandler, are keen to meet with West End residents who were affected directly or indirectly, or who have ideas about how our community can be better supported and prepared in emergency flooding events.
At the Spring gathering West End Resilience members agreed to host an informal discussion with Neale and Natalie to share our stories and ideas about practical activities and initiatives that could lead to lasting change.
This is exactly the kind of action that West End Resilience was set up to support so we hope you can come along!
Facilitators: Neale Chandler and Natalie Pitts, Community Recovery and Resilience Officers, Mt Alexander Shire.
When: 7-8.30pm, Monday 16th October
Where: Former Tea Rooms, Castlemaine Botanic Gardens (see map)
RSVP: westendresilience@gmail.com OR contact Kathy on 0437202804
Wilderhoods Reflection and Refresh
We will be taking a break from the 'working bee' format at the October Wilderhoods gathering and will instead have an informal reflection over a cuppa about what we have achieved and what we would like to do going forward. This will be facilitated by Cassia Read, who initiated the project with a series of workshops for West End Resilience last year.
Time: Sunday October 8th, 2-4pm
Place: Kathy's Place, 12 Thomas Street
RSVP info@westendresilience.org
We hope as many of you as possible can come along for this discussion. If you are unable to be there feel free to offer your reflections via an email before 8th October.
