West End “Wilderhoods”
Wilderhoods aims to explore ways of working with our neighbourhood to create a climate resilient and biodiverse environment. Wilderhoods is a project of the Castlemaine Institute funded through the DELWP Adapt Loddon Mallee Climate Ready Plan.
The West End Wilderhoods Project began when West End Resilience was chosen to pilot the concept with a series of workshops led by Cassia Read and colleagues in May-June 2022.
After learning the principles and considering a range of options at the workshops we chose to focus on improving the natural habitats of our nature strip verges.
We work with local experts & neighbours to create richer habitats by identifying native grasses, removing invasive weeds, and building on what is already in existence including introduced species where they provide good habitats for birds, insects, lizards and the occasional echidna!
Anyone is welcome to join at any time along this journey. We meet approximately monthly at different resident’s nature strips for a hands-on working bee and chat.
There is no cost to participate in these activities. Just bring your curiosity and be prepared to get your hands dirty! Look for dates in the News & Events section of this website.
