YIMBY Compost in West End
YIMBY (yes in my backyard) is a hyper-local community composting system here in Castlemaine. Volunteers collect their neighbour’s organic food waste each week and process it into rich, high-quality compost that’s used to grow food in their backyards.
The West End currently have 8 Community Composters, with another 11 further afield. We also have a young GYMby team; 18-30 year olds who help composters with the physical demands of turning dozens of cubic meters of compost each year!
Diverting nitrogen-rich scraps this way closes the loop on (re)cycling food organics and reduces methane emissions coming from waste transportation and rotting organics in landfill.
All our Composters and GYMby’s receive free training and expertise in the YIMBY hot compost method from the YIMBY team: 3 partially-paid employees of The Hub Foundation who coordinate the program and build capacity in the broader community through workshops and information.
Yimby networks provide meaningful connections throughout our neighbourhood and foster valuable skills in hot composting and community building - both key aspects of a localised, climate resilient future
